About the archive

The George Padmore Institute archive commenced in 2003 and the materials relate to the black communities of Caribbean, African and Asian descent in post war Britain and continental Europe. The GPI (founded in 1991) has grown out of the community connected with New Beacon Books, Britain's first black publisher and bookshop, and its founder John La Rose (1927-2006). The Institute is named in memory of George Padmore, but we do not hold archives relating to him. More details can be found on our website.
